The Singers were guests of the Vale Symphonic Wind Band for a concert of Christmas music to raise funds for the Church’s forthcoming major building and restoration project.
A small but very appreciative audience enjoyed a wide variety of Christmas and other music performed by the Band and the Singers. The audience were also invited to join in the singing of some favourite Christmas carols.
The Band started the concert with the ever-popular ‘Sleigh Ride’ by Leroy Anderson followed by Prokofiev’s ‘Troika’ before moving on to some theatre music and a tribute to Glen Miller. The Singers then took over and, singing from the high alter, performed a range of sacred Christmas pieces from Jacob Handl’s Resonet in laudibus through Will Todd’s beautiful setting of ‘My Lord has come’ to a fast and lively setting of ‘Hodie Christus est’ but the Choir’s Musical Director, Dennis Pim. After the interval the Band treated the audience to another ser of pieces starting with a tribute to Fank Sinatra and ending with Leroy Anderson’s ‘A Christmas Festival’. After another audience carol the Linsdale Singers, singing this time from the front of the nave let, their hair down a bit with renditions of some well-known Christmas songs taken from a collection of unaccompanied Christmas arrangements by Dennis Pim that he has built up over the years.
A member of the Band remarked about the Singers performance she “thought you all sang beautifully – lovely diction, and great dynamics and articulation.” All in all a very satisfying concert that proved to be a splendid start to the Christmas season. A pity about the rather small audience, but the concert was in competition with the Aylesbury Festival Choir’s concert the same evening.
Tickets were £5 on the door and were also available on line through the Singers’ website.
