Music for Lent

Following the great successes of previous short ‘Concert & cakes’ Sunday afternoon concerts, the Linsdale Singers were delighted to have presented another one this time in the Sacred Heart Church in Leighton Buzzard. The was a new venue for the Choir, but as the group rehearses each week in the Church’s hall next to the Church, it was very appropriate that they gave a concert in the Church.

The concert occurred in the season of Lent, so the music was appropriate for this time of the Church’s year. It was unaccompanied and consisted of anthems, arrangements of spirituals and plainsong. Featured composers were Byrd, Tallis, Parry and John Rutter.

To mark the 100th anniversaries of both the end of the first World War and the death of Sir Hubert Parry, the Singers sang two pieces from the composer’s set of six ‘Songs of farewell’. The concert was completed by a short organ interlude played by the Church’s organist, Theresa Short, who played her own medley of well-known sacred songs. After the concert, tea and a wonderful selection of cakes were served in the Hall, kindly provided by members of the Church.

Luckily the very wintry weather of the previous week had passed, the snow had more or less melted and the concert was attended by a very appreciative audience of about 50 people. A successful concert with the singers on top form in the Church’s excellent acoustics and altogether a very enjoyable afternoon.

Tickets for the concert and tea were £6 and all proceeds were donated to the Sacred Heart Church who were still paying back the debt incurred for the construction of their splendid new hall. In addition the concert was included in the Oxjam Music Festival 2018, so there was a collection for the work of Oxfam after the concert. Copies of the new Oxjam Festival 2018 audio CDs, which include a track recorded by the Linsdale Singers, were available for sale at the concert.
