Concert with the Luton Concert Orchestra

Saturday 28th April 2018 at 7.45pm
The Methodist Church, The Square, Dunstable LU6 3SN

The Luton Concert Orchestra presents two main concerts each year – in May and October. Their usual venue is the Methodist Church in the centre of Dunstable. In addition, over the last few years they have also presented a popular fund raising Christmas concert in St Mary’s Church in Dunstable each December.

The orchestra presents a wide variety of light orchestral music and orchestral arrangements, from selections from Broadway shows to Strauss waltzes. To give the players a rest in each half of a concert, the Orchestra invites guest artistes to perform. Guests range from solo singers to large choirs and have included local 8-voice fund-raising group ‘Octad’, the Vauxhall Male Voice Choir and the Grand Union Community Choir. This was the third time the Linsdale Singers had joined the Orchestra, the first time being in October 2013 and then in the Spring of 2015, and the Choir was delighted to have been asked back to again be the Orchestra’s guests.

The orchestral music in the 28th April concert was on the general theme of TV and cinema, and included music by Eric Coates, Offenbach, Khachaturian, Strauss and Beethoven. The Singers’ contribution in the first half was a set of five pieces from ‘Song and Sonnets from Shakespeare’ – George Shearing’s jazzy settings of Shakespeare’s words accompanied by regular accompanist, Paul Daggett, on piano and orchestral member Vikki Miller on bass. In the second half the Singers presented two arrangements of songs from Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals followed by two arrangements of folksongs. Click the link below for a full list of the music.

Tickets for the concert were £7 with concessions £5. They were available at the door on the night.

The Methodist Church in Dunstable is located in the centre of the town on Ashton Square near the crossroads of High Street South and West Street. Ashton Square car park is a large car park right behind the church and is accessed from West Street via St Mary’s Gate, the turning by the Police Station.
