Concert & Cakes
English choral music through the centuries
Sunday 24th March 2019 at 4.00pm
The Church of St Mary and St Giles, Stony Stratford, Milton Keynes MK11 1BD
There had been a gap of six years since the Linsdale Singers last sang in St Mary & St Giles Church, and they were delighted to have returned on Sunday 24th March 2019 to present one of their popular series of Sunday afternoon ‘Concert and Cakes’ events.
The theme of this short concert was ‘English choral music through the centuries’. The first half consisted of sacred music suitable for the season of Lent by Tallis, Purcell, Parry, Holst and local composer Paul Edwards. Tea and delicous cakes were served in the interval and in the second half there was a selection secular choral music on the lighter side including madrigals, Victorian partsongs and arrangements of folksongs. In both halves the music was presented in a chronological order starting with music from the 16th century right up to composers of the 20th and 21st centuries.
The concert was a huge success, the audience were very appreciative and the choir sounded at their best in the wonderful acoustics of the Church. Many audience members commented on how much they had enjoyed the variety of music. The singers were very well looked after by Church members and are very grateful to them for the time and effort they put in to making the concert such a success. It is very much hoped it won’t be another 6 years before the Choir presents another concert in the Church.
The concert started at 4pm and finished just after 5.45pm. Entry to the concert was £5 at the door (under 18s free) and this included the interval refreshments. All proceeds were for the Church’s ongoing maintenance of its restored Willis pipe organ.
