Celebrating women composers

Stewkley Methodist Church, 103 High Street South, Stewkley, Leighton Buzzard LU7 0HU

Another in the Singers’ successful series of short Sunday afternoon ‘Concert & Cakes’ concerts. This time the singers visited Stewkley Methodist Church, a venue they have not sung in for many years. Joining them was Paul Daggett, the Singers regular accompanist, who accompanied some of the pieces and also played a short piano solo.

On International Women’s Day 2020 the Singers celebrated women composers with a wide selection of both sacred and secular choral pieces by women from the 11th century to the present day. Featured composers included Hildegard von Bingen, Fanny Hensel, Emma Lou Diemer, Eleanor Daley, Kate Rusby and the first performance of a piece composed by one of the singers.

International Women’s Day (8th March) is a global celebration of the social, cultural and political achievements and contributions of women, which have often been overlooked and ignored. The day is also a means of spreading awareness of the work that still needs to be done to achieve global gender equality and the Linsdale Singers is pleased to be able to further this cause in a small way.

The concert was held in aid of the Wing branch of the Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA), a national charity whose horses benefit the lives of over 25,000 disabled children and adults with riding and other fun activities, by providing therapy, fitness, skills development and opportunities for achievement.

After the concert there was be tea and cakes kindly provided by members of the Wing branch of the RDA, to which everyone is invited.

Entry was free, there was a retiring collection and a small donation for the teas with all proceeds going to the Wing branch of the RDA.
